TY - JOUR T1 - Ethno-psychopharmacology: Advances in current practice AU - Fleisher MH Y1 - 2009/03/04 N1 - 10.1001/jama.2009.232 JO - JAMA SP - 976 EP - 977 VL - 301 IS - 9 N2 - This text on ethnopsychopharmacology is an important effort to help fill a gap in current clinical practice and, in part, aspires to lead to more reasoned approaches to psychopharmacology as medication management. The editors, along with 24 other international contributors, have produced a well-written book about a topic that barely existed as serious discourse a decade ago. For readers not familiar with the broader topic of ethnopharmacology, it (briefly) is the scientific study of the similar and dissimilar relationships between ethnic groups, including medication dynamics and the broad cultural aspects of particular groups regarding their concepts of health. This text obviously focuses on the pharmacological aspects of psychiatric medications from this perspective, and in that regard the editors have created a work well worth reading.
