Burgeoning economic markets and globalization have resulted in millions of international travelers throughout Asia. These factors, along with continued population growth, limited access to health care, and genetic mutations, contribute to the rapid dissemination of infectious pathogens through this region. Recent examples include severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), avian influenza, and drug-resistant tuberculosis. Such outbreaks highlight the critical need for public health authorities to understand not only the biology of these infections but also the diverse cultural, geographic, and economic characteristics of Asia's many nations.
