My colleagues and I conducted 39 semidirective interviews of clinical investigators (mean [SD] age, 52 [8] years) who had published data on French public-funded research programs.2 Confidentiality was guaranteed and we believe that interviews were therefore conducted with openness. We found that 33 investigators (84%) were unable to cite even 1 of the 3 International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) authorship criteria, 23 (59%) acknowledged having been recipients of guest authorship, and only 7 (18%) agreed that the 3 criteria must be met.
