TY - JOUR T1 - EValuating other diseases with computed tomographic screening for lung cancer AU - Wittig G Y1 - 2013/02/20 N1 - 10.1001/jama.2012.157202 JO - JAMA SP - 655 EP - 656 VL - 309 IS - 7 N2 - The authors conceded technical problems in attempting to derive CAC scoring from CT scans not optimized for cardiac imaging. Even dedicated calcium scoring CT scanning has not proved cost-effective or useful for widespread screening.3 The use of CT scans for osteoporosis screening is problematic compared with the better standardized dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Extensive research would be required to correlate incidental thoracic vertebral imaging with existing lumbar/hip DEXA, with no guarantee it would prove clinically useful. In addition, identification of early COPD by CT scanning, given the fact that cessation of tobacco use is the relevant intervention for the overwhelming majority of patients, does not seem to be a wise use of resources.
