To the Editor: The authors of the BASALT study1 concluded that their findings “provide reassurance that [symptom-based adjustment] SBA of inhaled corticosteroids dose may be appropriate in most patients with mild to moderate asthma.” They reached that conclusion because treatment failure rates for adult patients with well or partially controlled asthma managed by either the physician assessment–based adjustment (PABA) method or the SBA method were similar. However, I hesitate to accept this conclusion for 2 reasons.
