As stated in the foreword of Public Health for an Aging Society, the year 2011 marked a significant milestone as the first baby boomers reached age 65 years, thus joining the ranks of the older population. The global population is aging, a phenomenon blessed with an increasing number of older people living full and healthy lives on the one hand yet tainted by increasing frailty, functional and social dependence, and rising health costs on the other. The publication of this book comes at a time when researchers, health care professionals, and policy makers prepare to meet the increasing challenges of an aging society.
