TY - JOUR T1 - GLucose-insulin-potassium for suspected acute myocardial infarction AU - Chaudhuri A, Nesto R, Dandona P Y1 - 2012/09/05 N1 - 10.1001/jama.2012.9768 JO - JAMA SP - 859 EP - 860 VL - 308 IS - 9 N2 - To the Editor: Dr Selker and colleagues demonstrated that out-of-hospital administration of an infusion of glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK) in patients with suspected acute myocardial infarction (AMI) reduced the incidence of cardiac arrest or in-hospital mortality as well as infarct size.1 These outcomes occurred despite the induction of hyperglycemia (blood glucose level >160 mg/dL in 71% of the GIK group and in 45% of the placebo group), which is known to be associated with greater mortality,2 suggesting that insulin may have a cardioprotective effect.
