Although the number of dedicated pediatric emergency departments staffed with physicians who have completed fellowships in pediatric emergency medicine is increasing in the United States, the majority of all pediatric emergencies are still seen and treated in emergency departments that care for adults as well as children. In some emergency departments, pediatric patients may account for a large proportion of the patients seen on any given day. Therefore, it is imperative that the emergency medicine practitioner be prepared to manage emergencies unique to children while simultaneously caring for adult patients. Given the differences in disease patterns and presentations between adults and children, this can be quite challenging at times.
