Young mothers are more likely to be poor, undereducated, and living in rural areas. Data show that the risk of dying in pregnancy is 5 times higher for girls aged 10 to 14 years compared with women in their 20s. Teenaged girls' babies also are at risk: about 1 million babies born to adolescent girls die in their first year.
