Wind, water, sails, steam, sailors, and the sea: New Ways on Banquereau (cover) contains all aspects of maritime art, at its realistic best. New England and the nearby fisheries, including the Grand Banks, have served as inspiration for generations of painters, a continuum comprising such luminaries as Fitz Hugh Lane, Willard Leroy Metcalf, Frederick Childe Hassam, and Thomas M. Hoyne (1923-1989). Lane painted in the manner of the mid-19th century (JAMA cover, August 17, 1994), Metcalf and Hassam represented the turn of the century and the early 1900s (JAMA cover, May 9, 2012), and Hoyne defines contemporary marine artistry. While Lane and Metcalf, along with others based in the Gloucester, Massachusetts, area, painted what they experienced and saw—albeit with the interpretation of their respective styles—Hoyne painted a world that had not existed for almost 100 years.
