In Reply: Dr Jacobs and colleagues indicate that we used a broad definition for conformal radiation therapy in our study. Our intent was to compare patterns of use and patient outcomes of IMRT to conformal radiation techniques as used in the community. An alternative approach of comparing the more narrowly defined 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy with IMRT was used in another study and demonstrated similar results.1 Our findings are consistent while applying a broader definition and strengthen the conclusion that IMRT reduces morbidity compared with conformal radiation therapy.
