The researchers assessed the incidence of dementia in more than 12 800 people 65 years and older from rural and urban areas in Mexico, Peru, China, and India and urban sites in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela. They applied criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition) (DSM-IV) and the 10/66 Dementia Diagnosis—a recently developed cross-culturally validated algorithm for diagnosing dementia in those with little or no education.
