Rates of bone density testing have reached a plateau in recent years.1 Despite recommendations from the US Preventive Services Task Force2 and the National Osteoporosis Foundation3 for universal screening of postmenopausal women aged 65 years and older, Medicare data indicate that over a 7-year period, only 52% of eligible women had a bone density test.1 This discordance between US guidelines for bone density screening and actual practice is concerning, especially because half of US postmenopausal women older than 50 years will experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime.2
