The February 15 statement said that the public, physicians, and insurers have yet to fully recognize PAD and its associated risks. This disconnect is particularly evident for women, the statement authors said, as there has been no clinical research to evaluate sex-based differences that might underlie the delayed, postmenopausal presentation of PAD (Hirsch AT et al. Circulation. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0b013e31824c39ba [published online February 15, 2012]). The statement was written in collaboration with the Vascular Disease Foundation.
