After 22 years, approximately 60% of participants from the Systolic Hypertension in the Elderly Program (SHEP) trial died, and less than 50% of the deaths were from a cardiovascular cause. There were no statistically significant differences in all-cause mortality by the various techniques the investigators used in analyzing these data (area between active and placebo survival curves, log-rank test, time to 70th percentile survival). Instead, there were statistically significant differences between the intervention and control groups only for the outcome of cardiovascular death.
