According to the report, at the end of 2010, 89% of the world's population—6.1 billion people—have access to drinking water sources from such improvements as piped supplies and protected wells. However, the data collected only measured access to improved water sources (that protected from contamination)—and did not assess the quality, reliability, or sustainability of the water supply.
