The researchers learned that when dopamine levels drop significantly, as they do in patients with Parkinson disease, RGS4 becomes overactive and disrupts brain circuits involved with learning. In mice that lacked RGS4, a drop in dopamine did not affect motor skills, while mice with normal levels of RGS4 experienced a significant loss of balance and coordination.
