Physicians are now treating a variety of diseases in patients in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s—diseases for which received wisdom is based on a much younger patient population. Are rheumatic diseases really the same in the older age group? What is the antirheumatic therapy experience for these conditions in a group of much older patients? These questions remain unanswered, but Yuri Nakasato and Raymond Yung have attempted to summarize where things currently stand. Geriatric Rheumatology reinforces the contention that the current data identify a knowledge gap and a need to readdress the natural history and best therapy of rheumatic disease in a demographic group for which published experience and clinical trial data are inadequate.
