Previously, the Bush Administration was accused of ignoring the scientific evidence about the product’s safety and effectiveness and limiting access to the drug for political reasons, and now the Obama Administration is receiving similar criticism. After its initial approval by the FDA as a prescription-only product, the emergency contraceptive became available in 2006 for over-the-counter sales to women 18 years or older and for prescription sales to younger women.
