The past decade has seen unprecedented increases in demand for global health experiences from trainees in a wide range of health-related disciplines.1 There has been a parallel expansion of global health involvement on the part of universities and faculty in industrialized countries. Given the complex and varied health challenges in Africa, it is not surprising that many nascent global health workers are traveling to the continent to participate in activities ranging from clinical work to public health practice and research. To date, there have been few published resources to help prospective global health workers prepare for their initial experiences in Africa. In their recently published book, Africa: A Practical Guide for Global Health Workers, editors Laurel Spielberg and Lisa Adams offer a unique resource to fill this important gap.
