The condition, acute urinary retention, is a severe complication associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A cross-sectional survey of 6074 men treated for this urologic emergency showed that most men received urethral catheterization followed by further treatment without a catheter (TWOC). In most cases, the success of TWOC is almost doubled if an α1-blocker is administered before catheter removal.
