To the Editor: The study by Dr Rice and colleagues investigated the effect of enteral n-3 fatty acids, GLA, and antioxidants on ALI.1 The authors demonstrated that patients in the treatment group had a higher mortality rate and fewer days free from the ventilator, intensive care unit, and organ failure compared with the control group. These results are in contrast to previous studies demonstrating a protective role for n-3 fatty acids during sepsis or acute respiratory distress syndrome.2
