Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) painted the whole spectrum of artistic styles. His was an eclectic oeuvre, not limited or constrained in any manner. Still life, abstraction, Cubism, portraiture, satire, and landscape—such as The Last of New England—The Beginning of New Mexico (cover)—rotated in and out, depending on Hartley's perspective and place. One of the peripatetic artists in the lofty sphere of modernism, Hartley traveled widely, floating in and out of the varied locales of his homeland, living several times in Europe and absorbing its charms. He eventually settled in Maine, the state of his birth, completing the cycle of life and of his art.
