TY - JOUR T1 - IN vitro disease studies AU - Kuehn BM Y1 - 2011/08/24 N1 - 10.1001/jama.2011.1197 JO - JAMA SP - 815 EP - 815 VL - 306 IS - 8 N2 - A major goal of the initiative is to find a noninvasive alternative to obtaining difficult-to-sample tissues such as heart and bone marrow. Being able to transform samples taken from accessible tissues such as blood or skin into iPSCs, and then differentiating them into cardiac, kidney, or other types of cells, could allow researchers an opportunity to study diseases in vitro. Such in vitro models would allow scientists to examine the effects of genetic alterations, treatments, and environmental influences on a disease process in the context of cells from a particular individual.
