However, Petty points out the difficulty of comparing both studies. The study of Petty et al was a retrospective, 10-year evaluation in a single intensive care unit, while our article was based on a prospective, multicenter, international review. Furthermore, the study by Petty et al lacked important demographics information (such as age or sex) and, at that time, did not have any objective assessments of patient severity (ie, simplified acute physiology score II or APACHE III scores).
