To the Editor: As the chief medical
officer of CMS, I have seen first-hand the dedication and clinical
expertise of hundreds of physicians working in the nation's prisons
and jails. Those physicians have chosen to work in corrections,
providing appropriate and compassionate care to inmate-patients, a
population with serious and challenging medical needs. Consequently, I
was surprised and disappointed to see JAMA publish 2
articles by Mr Skolnick1- 2 that promulgated a negative
stereotype of these dedicated physicians who work in correctional
health care.
