Almost a quarter of a century has elapsed since the first edition of Principles of Airway Management was published in 1988, and much has changed in the field. Historically, anesthesiologists have been primarily responsible for this area, but other specialties are now becoming increasingly involved. Although endotracheal intubation using a rigid laryngoscope was an established technique described by Macintosh in 1943, many innovations have since found widespread clinical application. Perhaps the 2 most important contributions to airway care have been the laryngeal mask airway developed by Brain in the United Kingdom in 1983 and appearing in the United States in 1992 and the fiberoptic (now video-assisted) flexible laryngoscope, championed by the late Andranik Ovassapian, a mentor and colleague of mine for more than 2 decades. The fourth edition of Principles of Airway Management is a comprehensive text of all aspects of the modern-day practice.
