A routine mammogram performed in the fall of 2004 revealed a 9-mm spiculated mass deep within the upper inner quadrant of her left breast. Prior annual mammograms had been normal. No mass was palpable in this area, but ultrasound demonstrated a hypoechoic mass at 10 o’clock a few centimeters from the nipple. A stereotactic core biopsy was performed and disclosed an infiltrating lobular carcinoma.
