The agency based its approval on a multicenter study in the United States and 4 other countries of about 22 000 participants aged 50 to 59 years. Half received the vaccine and half received a placebo. After a year of follow-up, the vaccine reduced the risk of developing shingles by about 70% compared with placebo.
