End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is an increasing public health care burden. Each year the incidence and prevalence exceed the preceding year's values, having increased from 87 177 and 365 334, respectively, in 1998 to 112 476 and 586 480, respectively, in 2008. The majority of patients with ESRD are treated with chronic dialysis therapy. Hence, every practitioner of medicine should be aware of the basic concepts of dialysis, and persons specializing in the delivery of dialysis must be equipped with in-depth knowledge of the field. The fourth edition of Principles and Practice of Dialysis is intended to be a reference guide for busy clinicians.
