AB The first case of intraperitoneal cystotomy was reported by Dr. Francis B. Harrington1 in 1893. In this instance the operation was performed for ulcerative cystitis.At this time cystotomy by any route was undertaken only in cases of extreme gravity. The mortality from suprapubic operations, operations through the perineum or urethra was not low; therefore, this apparently more serious procedure was not adopted by any great number of operators, and nothing more appeared in the literature concerning it until about a year ago, when Dr. C H. Mayo2 reported five cases of transperitoneal removal of tumors of the bladder which were operated on in St. Mary's Hospital. A few months later Drs. Charles Scudder and Lincoln Davis3 reported four cases in which bladder tumors were removed through an intraperitoneal cystotomy.One of the greatest difficulties with which earlier workers with lesions of the bladder had to contend was the diagnosis.
