AB The preliminary report of the Anesthesia Commission of the American Medical Association1 shows the splendid results which the profession may confidently expect from its labors, and indicates likewise the vast scope of the field on which it has entered. It would seem presumptuous on my part to undertake any individual efforts in the study of the anesthesia problem at the present time, when we know that the whole subject is being so carefully and thoroughly studied. My justification for the following remarks, however, is to be found in the fact that, in operations within the nasopharynx and throat, there are certain peculiar problems which present themselves forcibly to the operator and render it imperative for him to understand them thoroughly, not only from the standpoint of the effect of the anesthetic on the safety of the patient, but also with a view of facilitating the proper
