AB The editor of this volume remarks in his preface to this edition that he hopes this book will reflect "progress in the evolution of what is special about the aged person and the care of the elderly." The changes since the previous edition in 1983 tell us a good deal about what has happened in geriatric care and suggest some things that remain to be done.This is a very revised new edition. Most of the authors are new; many of the choices reflect Dr Reichel's move to Georgetown University's School of Medicine (Washington, DC). Whole areas of emphasis have been added, and these additions reflect geriatrics' recent emphases. Chapters on functional assessment and drug therapy are strong. A chapter is given over to health maintenance, but the conclusions must rely on weak data. Incontinence receives special attention as a subchapter. Alcohol and other drug dependency is highlighted, as is
