    While great progress has been made in the reduction of morbidity and mortality rates for invasive cancer of the uterine cervix (the "triumph" part), it also must be recognized that invasive cancer of the cervix remains an important and potentially fatal disease. The American Cancer Society estimated for 1989 that 13 000 new such cases will be observed and that 7000 women will die of the disease in the United States.1 Thus, a potentially curable disease has not been eliminated. It is not known how many of the invasive cancers occur in women who had the benefit of cytological screening, but at least some may have escaped the safety net, accounting for the "tragedy" part of the subtitle.
