AB Rubella Vaccine Can Cause Transient Joint Pain 
    Children may develop transient arthritic symptoms two weeks to two months after a rubella vaccination, investigators from Detroit report.George R. Thompson, MD, and Robert G. Brackett, PhD, made their recommendation while discussing the results of a field test of rubella vaccine in Michigan last April and May. In adults, arthritis is a known complication of naturally occurring rubella and its symptoms have been reported as occurring after rubella vaccination.In the Michigan trial, 11,758 children received HPV-77 DK-12 live virus rubella vaccine, and 329 (2.8%) of them developed arthritic symptoms. Forty-nine children (0.42%) were classified as having arthritis.(The vaccine used in the field trial was licensed in early December.)Dr. Thompson examined 40 of these 49 children and reported his findings during the American Rheumatism Association's interim meeting in Tucson, Ariz.
