Nor were his contributions in the practice of medicine or medical writing commensurate with his works as publisher and editor or with his eminence among the advanced writers and philosophers of the times as appraised by Poynter.1 Most of Chapman's youth was spent at the village of Ruddington before he was apprenticed to a watchmaker of Worksop. This venture soon lost its appeal, and he sought asylum with his eldest brother studying medicine in Edinburgh; the latter subsequently provided money and supplies to set him up as a watchmaker and optician in Adelaide, Australia.
