Additional information has been obtained with serum transaminase values and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) levels with isoenzymes. In acute infectious mononucleosis without icterus, the LDH level is consistently elevated (700 to 1400 units) and the alkaline phosphatase activity may rise to 10 Bodansky units. Despite significant hyperbilirubinemia in infectious mononucleosis, the transaminase values are both consistently below 200 units, the alkaline phosphatase activity below 20 units, and the lethal dose (LD5) liver fraction is less than 20%. In infectious hepatitis, the LD5 is more than 50% in almost all cases and the transaminase values numerically approximate the LDH values.
