    Only the lateral or medial 25% (offending portion) of the nail plate and its underlying bed and matrix need be resected.... By careful dissection the surgeon can remove the bed and matrix in toto, proceeding from the distal end of the toe and working proximally. Techniques to close the operative site allow the skin margins to lie adjacent and below the 75% of the nail plate left intact....
