Schneck, MD, recalled to mind some remarks by Dr. Kurt R. Eisseler. As a discussant by invitation at a scientific session of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York, Dr. Eisseler observed that the only way the unconscious being can say "no" or "not" is by means of paralysis. Hence, the paralyzed state of the dreamer in Fuseli's painting represents the refutation of the dream state or reality.
