The inhabitants of Switzerland and western Austria believe it is unwholesome to sleep on one's back; trolls, known as Druden, heavily ascend the midnight stair to crouch on the chest of the sleeper. The resulting oppression prevents outcry and results in the symptoms which Dr. Schneck has so aptly described in his special report. As there are no horses in the legend, it is likely that the depicted mare was added later as stated.
