Its occurrence is exceedingly rare, however, when the patient has been properly prepared for surgery by the preoperative administration of iodine," permit me to state that Dr. Ryan and I were members of the house staff at the same time (1939-1941) at Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY.At that time Kings County Hospital had the largest thyroid surgical service of any municipal hospital in the United States. It was one of two thyroid residencies approved for certification by the American Board of Surgery. As a house officer on this thyroid service many instances of postthyroidectomy crises were seen and recorded. All were treated prior to surgery with strong iodine solution according to the method of
