It is based on a previous German monograph edited by Schettler and now out of print. Boyd has joined Schettler as coeditor of the present text. The number of authors has been enlarged to include participants from Germany, Switzerland, Scotland, Hungary, and the United States.The book, profusely illustrated, runs to 1,029 pages. Regrettably in the English edition a number of clumsy sentences retain hints of their German origin. The quality of the illustrations in the section on arrhythmias is not up to the standard of the rest of the book. Furthermore, the subdivisions of the book could be improved. For example, chapter 6 is divided into nine sections, with section "g" a composite of two disparate parts, the first dealing with plasma lipids and lipoproteins from the biochemical viewpoint,
