Dr. Charles H. Liebermann was born in Riga, Russia, Sept 15, 1813, and died in Washington, DC, March 27, 1886. Although he was not a member of local Jewish organizations, his neighbors regarded him as of that faith. He was one of the nine physicians at Lincoln's deathbed and is pictured among the many figures in Alonzo Chappel's painting (1867), "The Last Hours of Lincoln."The year he emigrated to the United States, 1840, he is said to have performed the first operation for strabismus in this country. He spent his entire American professional life in Washington, DC. One of the founders of Georgetown University's medical school, he was professor of surgery on two occasions, 1849-1853 and 1857-1861.2
