Renography is nearly ideal for searching through large groups of patients to find the relatively few with important lesions. Among categories of patients effectively screened are those with hypertension and those with abdominal or back pain. A study of apparently well men suggests that renography may be an important addition to the routine medical checkup. Renal scanning and renography used together are more effective in finding disease than either alone. However, present radiation levels require that the scan be used on a selective basis. Faster scanning and isotopes with shorter half-life will soon allow consideration of the combination for screening on a more widespread basis.
