AB Medicine always has considered its mission as twofold: to advance the science and art of medicine and to protect the public health. Within this latter context medicine has waged its unrelenting attack on quackery in all its forms. At its first meeting in1847, the AMA specified that mission when it stated: "Physicians, as conservators of the public health, are bound to bear emphatic testimony against quackery in all its forms." And, since chiropractic's questionable birth in 1895, medicine has not wavered in its stand that it is an unscientific cult. The AMA's House of Delegates in 1966 adopted a policy statement that detailed that stand: "It is the position of the medical profession that chiropractic is an unscientific cult whose practitioners lack the necessary training and background to treat human disease.
