Although reconstruction of the face and especially the nose had been performed by surgeons since ancient times, Tagliacozzi is credited with perfecting the reparative techniques and with performing them with greater skill than his predecessors. Equally significant was the preparation of his De Curtorum Chirurgia per Insitionem (The Surgery of Deformities by Transplantation), the first treatise devoted exclusively to the theory and practice of the art.1 The monograph contained descriptions of his surgical management including the trivia, and was illustrated with woodcuts made under the direction of the author.Although Tagliacozzi's reputation has persisted through the centuries, valid biographic data remained unassembled until the appearance in 1950 of an excellent and exhaustive study
