The results are promising, according to California investigators."There was a reduction in bleeding episodes and demonstrable rises in factors VIII and IX," says R.G. Desai, MD. He is chief of hematology at Orange County Medical Center, and assistant professor of medicine, University of California at Irvine. The increased levels of factors VIII and IX have persisted for periods up to nine months—the longest follow-up at the time Dr. Desai and his co-workers reported their results to the Western Section meeting of the American Federation for Clinical Research.Of the patients, four had factor VIII deficiency (hemophilia A), one had factor IX deficiency (hemophilia B), and one had Von Willebrand's disease. All but the patient with Von Willebrand's disease had pretreatment levels of factor VIII or IX of less than 1%
