AB Friedrich Trendelenburg, an adroit technical surgeon whose procedures were based upon physiological fundamentals, was born in Berlin, the son of a professor of philosophy at the University.1 His early education was received at home, his mother tutoring him in English and his father in Latin and mathematics. After attending a boy's school in Berlin, he spent a year in Glasgow with his family, studying anatomy, embryology, and physics. His medical education was continued at the University of Berlin where he studied under Traube and von Langenbeck and received the degree in medicine at the age of 22. The Military Hospital in Gorlitz provided him with his first clinical responsibilities, and, after submitting his inaugural thesis in Latin on Ancient Indian Surgery, he became first assistant to von Langenbeck.
