After attending a boy's school in Berlin, he spent a year in Glasgow with his family, studying anatomy, embryology, and physics. His medical education was continued at the University of Berlin where he studied under Traube and von Langenbeck and received the degree in medicine at the age of 22. The Military Hospital in Gorlitz provided him with his first clinical responsibilities, and, after submitting his inaugural thesis in Latin on Ancient Indian Surgery, he became first assistant to von Langenbeck. Six years later he was placed in charge of a surgical ward at the Friedrichschain Hospital in Berlin. At the age
