Never has there been such a concerted effort to undermine the confidence of patients in their family physician. This confidence is essential for the successful treatment of any chronic disease.The original University Group Diabetes Program (UGDP) report was given to the press four weeks before it was presented to a scientific meeting where it could be adequately criticized. This report was given to the press seven months before it was published and could be adequately studied. The Food and Drug Administration endorsed the study before publication and over the objection of their own advisory committee for endocrine drugs.
