AB At the recently concluded Second World Conference on Medical Education, some distinguished foreign medical educators expressed dissatisfaction with the training their medical graduates were receiving in the United States as interns and residents. On the other hand, there is widespread dissatisfaction in the United States at the performance of many foreign physicians now holding appointments in approved graduate training programs in American hospitals.Two recent actions will unquestionably bring about improvement. A foreign medical graduate who comes to the United States on the Exchange-Visitor program can no longer remain in this country as a "chronic student" in the hopes of remaining here permanently, but must return to his homeland after five years of American study. The target date for the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates certification for all foreign graduates serving approved internships or residencies in this country is July 1, 1960.
